This coming weekend we celebrate mom. Grandmothers, aunts, sisters, the women who rose up to love and support us unconditionally, I am one blessed woman to have been raised by a selfless mother, two amazing grandmothers and now, to have a loving mother-in-law.
We each have different stories of 'momma' - making supper in the kitchen, laughing at a silly joke, snuggling in the quiet morning, coaxing a little plant to grow, the smell of her t-shirt, her smile as your try to walk in her shoes.
I am so grateful for my momma and all she has given me, how she as taught me how to be resilient, strong, wise, kind, and dream. She and my dad have supported me every day and every step of the way with prayers, encouragement, counsel, and joy.
Mother's Day is one day out of 365 days and every day our mom's are there for us. But, every day is a new opportunity to celebrate and encourage our moms. In the Bible, the words "mother and father" are closely linked to the word 'honour'. To honour in Hebrew means 'a primitive root' to which we honour. What does that look like? Here are 9 + 1 ways we all honour our mothers.
1. Say "I love you." "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
2. Remember what she taught you. "She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue." -Proverbs 31:26
3. Forgive her and accept her forgiveness. "Bear with one another and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as Christ forgave you." - Colossians 3:13
4. Thank her. For all she has done for you. "Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honour to one another." - Romans 12:10
5. Spend time with her. A phone call, a note, a visit, a walk, a trip - time is precious and is most meaningfully spent with those we love. "Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them." - Proverbs 20:6-7
6. Help her. Small to big things all mean so much. "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves." - Romans 12:9-10
7. Encourage her. Words of affirmation, a hug for support, a smile of assurance, compliments that go the extra mile. "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." - 1 Thessalonians 5:11
8. Pray for her. "I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers." - Ephesians 1:16

9. Share her legacy. Pass on what she has taught you and given you. "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honour your father and mother'—which is the first commandment with a promise— 'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.'" - Ephesians 6:1-3

+ 1. Affirm her. Affirm your mom's identity in Christ and her character. "Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Give her everything she deserves! Festoon her life with praises!" - Proverbs 31:30-31
When I was 13, I wrote and recited the poem, 'You, My Mother' for my mom. It's found in my first poetry book, blue ink & epiphany: poetry. And to celebrate mothers, I have designed the poem in a FREE, printable download for you to enjoy and share!
I wish all you momma's out there a very blessed and special Mother's day to you! - AKS xox
